- Silverstone, located close to the village of the same name, had the honour of hosting the first grand prix in the newly created Formula One World Championship in 1950. It was won by Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo.
- The track was originally built on the site of World War Two bomber station RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track.
- Fernando Alonso holds the race lap record for the track in its current configuration – a time of 1m30.874s set during the 2010 grand prix, for Ferrari.Silverstone hosts a whole range of club and international racing series as well as the world's largest historic race meeting, the Silverstone Classic.
- It has been part of the WEC calendar since the series began in 2012.

It's obviously a circuit I know well, and it's one of my favourites. I just love the fast and flowing sequence of corners. It really suits my style and I love everything about it. The first sector is a bit better than it was before they changed it.
