Circuit length: 3.388 miles (5.451km)

  • The Shanghai International Circuit was opened in 2004 to host the first Chinese Grand Prix, which was won by Rubens Barrichello for Ferrari. His team-mate Michael Schumacher set a lap record of 1m32.238s that still stands today.
  • Designed by Hermann Tilke, a notable feature of the circuit is the long back straight, which at 1170 metres is equivalent to 11 football pitches laid end-to-end. It’s followed by a tight hairpin, making it a popular overtaking opportunity.
  • The track layout resembles the Chinese character shang, the first character in the name of the city Shanghai, meaning 'above' or 'ascend'.
  • Shanghai is seen as China's business capital and is home to the world's busiest container port.

ALEX'S TRACK VIEW

Another track I was quickest at first time out last year. The obvious feature is the really long back straight, so being able to get a good exit onto there is pretty key. It's probably also the biggest paddock in the world!
