  • The first plans for Fuji Speedway were for a 2.5-mile banked oval to hold NASCAR-style races, but it opened in 1965 as a road course, albeit it with one of the banked turns in place. This was later bypassed after it proved too dangerous.
  • Fuji hosted the first F1 race in Japan at the end of 1976, staging a famous title showdown between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Hunt secured the title after Lauda withdrew in terrible weather conditions. After 1977, F1 didn't return until 30 years later, when Lewis Hamilton won another extremely wet race. Once more, F1 only remained at Fuji for two years.
  • It has been part of the WEC calendar since the inaugural season in 2012. Toyota has won four of the first five races at its home circuit.
  • The circuit is located in the foothills of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 metres/12,389 feet.

ALEX'S TRACK VIEW

This is where I made my sportscar debut last year, so it will be cool going back there towards the end of a busy season. I'd never driven the track before and it was my debut in the car, but I set the fastest lap in the race so it must have suited me quite well!
